About Us
How Many of Me is a free tool that helps you discover how common (or rare) your name is in the United States. We use real government data from the U.S. Census Bureau (surname frequency from the 2010 Census) and the Social Security Administration (first name birth registrations from 1940–2020, adjusted for survival rates). Our estimates are transparent and based on publicly available datasets.
Our mission is simple: provide accurate, transparent, and free name statistics to anyone who's curious. We believe everyone deserves to know about their name's place in the American tapestry, without signing up, paying, or having their data sold.
How We Calculate Our Estimates
We combine two independent data sources to produce our estimates:
- First names come from the Social Security Administration's birth registration records spanning 1940–2020. We apply survival rate adjustments to estimate how many people with each name are likely alive today.
- Surnames come from the 2010 U.S. Census, which recorded the frequency of 162,254 surnames occurring 100 or more times.
- We multiply the independent probabilities of each name against the current U.S. population (~332 million) to produce a combined estimate.
Name searches run entirely in your browser. No names you enter are ever sent to any server. We use Google Analytics for aggregate traffic data only (see our Privacy Policy for details).
Data Transparency
We believe in full transparency. Our data sources are publicly available:
