Statistics Are Estimates
All name statistics and population counts displayed on How Many of Me are estimates based on publicly available data. These figures are intended for informational and entertainment purposes only and should not be treated as exact counts.
Data Sources
Our calculations rely primarily on data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the Social Security Administration (SSA). These agencies collect and publish demographic and name-frequency data that form the foundation of our estimates.
Why Actual Counts May Differ
There are several reasons why the actual number of people with a given name may differ from our estimates:
- Immigration: People who immigrated to the United States may carry names that are not fully represented in domestic birth records or census data.
- Name changes: Legal name changes due to marriage, divorce, personal preference, or other reasons are not consistently tracked across data sources.
- Cultural naming correlations: In some cultures, certain first names are strongly associated with particular surnames. Our model may not fully capture these correlations.
First Name Data Limitations
First name frequency data is derived from SSA records of U.S. births. This means it covers names given to children born in the United States and may under-represent names that are common among immigrant populations but less frequently assigned at birth domestically.
Surname Data Limitations
Surname data is sourced from the 2010 U.S. Census. Only surnames appearing 100 or more times in the census are included in the publicly available dataset. Less common surnames may therefore be absent from our calculations or estimated with lower accuracy.
Independence Assumption
Our methodology assumes that first names and last names are statistically independent of one another. In practice, this is not always the case. Certain first name and surname combinations may be more or less common due to cultural, ethnic, or regional factors. This assumption can introduce error into our estimates.
Survival Rate Approximations
To estimate the number of living individuals with a given name, we apply survival rate approximations based on actuarial life tables. These rates are generalized and may not precisely reflect the survival patterns of any specific demographic group.
